Web Sites

Strategy Page - www.strategypage.com

Founded in the 1990s by James Dunnigan as part of his efforts to promote and facilitate the application of wargaming, the Strategy Page rapidly grew to cover all elements of military analysis. It is now the largest such site in the world.  The site’s coverage of things military is so broad you may need several seconds to find the wargaming info.  The effort is worth it.

Web-Grognards - www.grognard.com

Founded in 1995 this is a sight by and for those who take commercial wargaming seriously. Hence the site may also be of value to many who work in military and academic wargaming.  The site covers the three principle types of commercial wargaming; computer, print (board), and miniatures.

Gamasutra - www.gamasutra.com

Founded in 1997 for video game developers, Gamasutra is owned and operated by UBM TechWeb (formerly a part of CMP Media), a division of United Business Media, and acts as the online sister publication to the print magazine Game Developer. It includes regularly updated video game news and features, other online resources for game developers, and a job posting board for employment in the video game industry. Gamasutra and its team of editors won a Webby Award in 2006 and 2007; their 5 word acceptance speeches were "Art plus science, still games" and "Heart plus science equals games", respectively

Conferences

In addition to Connections there are at least three other conferences that deal in part with wargaming:

Military Operations Research Society (MORS) Symposium

The MORA Symposium is the principle annual meeting of US Defense Operations Research Professionals. While only one of the symposium’s 30+ working groups directly address wargaming many of the other workshops will include individual papers relevant to wargaming and typically one or more of the symposium wide events will deal with wargaming.  The principle disadvantage of this Symposium is the requirement for participants to have not less then a secret. This prevents the participation of most commercial and academic wargame contributors. MORS Symposium are typically held in June and are hosted by a different service, in a different location, each year.

Inter-service/Industry Training, Simulation & Education Conference (I/ITSEC)

I/ITSEC promotes cooperation among the Armed Services, Industry, Academia and various Government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multi-service programs. Originally something of a trade show for flight and other training simulators I/ITSEC’s parent organization, the National Training & Simulation Association has successfully broadened their scope contributing to the conference’s growth.  In 2010 about 20,000 individuals participated in I/ITSEC including members of all four services, representatives of almost 600 companies and over 2,000 individuals from 57 countries.   While only a small fraction of these individuals were wargame practitioners, a small fraction of such a large conference is still provides considerable wargame content.  I/ISEC is held the week after Thanksgiving in Orlando Florida.  For more information go to: http://www.iitsec.org/Pages/default.aspx

Origins

Ironically while I/ITSEC was diversifying to include wargaming to Origins was diversifying away from it’s serious commercial wargaming origins.  Started in 1975 as a way that serious wargames could build a community over the years Origins has expanded to include all forms of strategy gaming. At origins one is likely to encounter families looking for games they can play together, elementary school teachers learning about the use of games in the classroom, teenagers and 20 somethings playing live roleplaying, computer games, miniature games depicting every era of warfare and even a few service members and historians discussing the craft of wargaming.  Origins is held in June in Columbus Ohio.
